STUDY SAYS: FAMILIES WANT SAFETY

Whether it's moving to a different home around the block or relocating to a new city, families face additional challenges when moving with children.

A recent Rent.com survey when choosing a new family home, 61% of parents cited a safe neighborhood as being the most important factor.  A quarter of parents (24%) believe that a living space large enough for the entire family to live in comfortably is equally important.  One third of children (34%) want their own bedrooms, 27% wish for a neighborhood with other kids their own age and 25% pine for a big backyard.

WHAT A BUYER WANTS

Forget that "man cave" or home theater room: what men crave more than women in a new house is a luxurious bathroom, a guest bedroom, a dining room and views. On the other hand, female house hunters value a home office more than a kids' playroom, dining room or luxurious bathroom. These are just a few of the more surprising findings of a recent survey of 1,000 house hunters released by real estate brokerage ZipRealty.

The three biggest turn-offs when viewing a home in person are structural damage, bad odors, a busy street and an awkward floor plan. While searching online, lack of parking and few or no photos and low square footage are the biggest deal-breakers.

Here are the 10 most-desired home features for both men and women:
1.   Garage or parking space
2.   Master suite
3.   Ample storage space
4.   Large/walk-in closets
5.   Guest bedroom
6.   Outdoor entertainment area
7.   Gourmet or updated kitchen
8.   Breakfast room or eat-in kitchen
9.   Large yard
10. Wood floors
